Transportation picks you up and drops you off along the main road of Santa Teresa. We pick up from Rocamar in the north all the way along the main road to Malpais.
The bioluminescence tour is, by far, my favorite of all the tours we offer. Every time I've done it, it's been a surreal experience, one of those things that's hard to put into words. It's not something you get to experience every day, which is why it's the tour I personally recommend the most.
The adventure begins with a short boat ride, followed by a beautiful sunset. But the really special part comes afterward, when night falls and the bioluminescence show begins.
This natural phenomenon is caused by tiny marine organisms that produce light when the water around them moves. Imagine swimming in complete darkness, and with every movement of your hands or every stroke, the water around you lights up in a glowing fluorescent blue. It's absolutely incredible!
And when you put on your snorkeling mask, which is included in the tour, and look beneath the surface, the experience becomes even more impressive. Watching the water light up around people as they swim feels like something straight out of another world.
Personally, it always reminds me of scenes from the movie Avatar. That feeling of being surrounded by light in the middle of nature is something that's hard to forget.
My Recommendation: If you only have time for one tour during your visit to Santa Teresa, this would be my pick without a second thought. As we'd say in Costa Rica, "¡este es el que más me promete!" (our way of saying this is the one we like the most!)
An afternoon-to-night boat tour that ends with a swim in bioluminescent water in the Gulf of Nicoya.
The tour starts at Bahía Tambor. The first part of the tour goes through the Pochote Mangrove, where a local naturalist guide explains how the mangrove works and points out the wildlife that lives there.
Next is a stop at Playa Vivos, a quiet beach, to watch the sunset.
After dark, the boat moves to the bioluminescence area, where you can get in the water when conditions are safe. Then the boat returns to Bahía Tambor.
